What is the difference between a retainer and a mouth appliance?

i lost my bottom appliance and i was looking for pictures of appliance and retainers and they seem different hope you can help me :)|||Look up the ones for the bottom arch from the pictures for the appliance (usually you have an active component in the appliance):

Reatiners sit only passively without any active component exerting pressure:
