Why should you turn off an appliance before unplugging it?

It is a saftey issue or can it harm the appliance?|||It will not harm the appliance. Nor is there a safety issue in unplugging with the appliance switched on.

There could be a safety issue if you later plug the appliance back in with it switched in - as it may start up unexpectedly.

%26gt; An arc also takes place in the appliance switch

%26gt; contacts and / or the wall socket switch , the arc

%26gt; is caused by " back emf"

Mmm.. if the device is such as to generate an arc that way (usually if it has a largish motor in it) it should have a snubber to quench the back EMF and so suppress the arc at the switch. It won't help if you break the circuit at the outlet, though.|||When an appliance is on and drawing current then when its plug is just pulled out then a little arc can take place on both the appliance plug and the mains socket, it takes a long long time before the arc damages the socket contacts, An arc also takes place in the appliance switch contacts and / or the wall socket switch , the arc is caused by " back emf " , it is not a safety issue .

Edit " To the guy below ! even a 100watt lamp creates a spark when unplugged or switched , we are not talking power stations where contacts are imersed in oil !!! TVs have a couple of 1mfd caps to stop the contacts in the on / off switch pitting or arcing !

Cheers Pete|||Depends. Most appliances today have a microprocessor and run an OS. When you turn it off, you give it time to clean up memory and do a proper shutdown. When you unplug it, you bypass all that, which long term may be harmful - especially if the device has moving parts, like a hard drive.|||Yeah, especially in air conditioners and televisions. They say it will harm the appliance. I did it once with my LCD TV, I just unplugged it without turning off, I've done it for like 2-3 times and then, when I brought it to the service center, they said it's a technical failure caused by unplugging the appliance without turning off.
