Does a transformer use less power when an appliance is not in use?

Essentially, would there be a difference in the power usage between an appliance that is running and an appliance that is in 'standby' mode, but still attached to the mains power. Does the transformer draw more from the mains supply when it is under load, or am I wasting my time pushing the off button on my vcr every night?|||The transformer does draw more when it's under load - you're definitely not wasting your time.
